Texas tax

Texas has no state income tax on wages, so nothing more comes out of your paycheck for the state.

Your tax rates

  • Effective rate: 16.0%. That share of your pay goes in federal, state and payroll taxes.
  • Marginal rate: 19.6%. Of your next dollar of pay, about 20 cents goes in tax, so you keep about 80 cents.

How is my paycheck worked out?

  1. Pre-tax deductions. A traditional 401(k), health insurance and HSA contributions come off before income tax. Health insurance and HSA also come off before Social Security and Medicare.
  2. Federal income tax. Your pay less the standard deduction ($16,100 for a single filer), taxed bracket by bracket from 10% to 37%.
  3. Social Security and Medicare. 6.2% and 1.45% of your pay, with Social Security stopping at $184,500.
  4. State tax. Nothing in nine states; a flat rate or brackets in the others.

The calculator works out the year and divides it across your paychecks. Every step and formula is on how we calculate.

How do US paycheck taxes work?

Questions about US take-home pay

How much tax comes out of a $60,000 salary in 2026?

For a single filer in Texas, $5,020.00 federal income tax and $4,590.00 Social Security and Medicare, leaving $50,390.00 ($1,938.08 every two weeks). In California add $2,353.08 of state tax and SDI.

What is FICA on my paycheck?

Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500 of pay) and Medicare (1.45% of all pay). Your employer pays the same again on top. See Social Security and Medicare.

Why is my paycheck different from this estimate?

We work out the year’s tax and spread it evenly across your paychecks. Your employer withholds from each paycheck using your W-4 and the IRS tables, and benefits, overtime or a second job change the numbers. Over a steady year they should come out close.

Does the calculator include local taxes?

Only New York City’s, when you tick the box. Other city and county income taxes, such as Pennsylvania’s local earned income tax or Ohio city taxes, are not included. Each state’s page says what it leaves out.

Do you store what I type?

No. The sums run in your own browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else. The address bar keeps your answers after a # sign so you can bookmark them, and browsers never send that part to a server.

Is this official?

No. My Salary Calculator is an independent site. For your own withholding, use the IRS’s Tax Withholding Estimator.
