States with no income tax in 2026

The short answer

9 states take no income tax from wages in 2026: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. A paycheck there has federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare taken out, and no state income tax. On $60,000 a year, a single filer keeps $50,390.00 in most of them (a little less in Alaska and Washington), against $48,036.92 in California.

Which states have no income tax in 2026?

These 9 states take no income tax from wages. Each links to its own paycheck calculator.

  • Alaska: no statewide sales tax either; the state relies on oil revenue and its Permanent Fund, and pays most residents a yearly dividend.
  • Florida: its constitution rules out a personal income tax; it relies on sales tax and property tax.
  • Nevada: it relies on sales tax and taxes on gaming; employers pay a payroll tax of their own.
  • New Hampshire: its tax on interest and dividends ended after 2024, so it now taxes no personal income at all.
  • South Dakota: it relies on sales tax, and has no state income tax form to fill in.
  • Tennessee: its Hall tax on interest and dividends ended in 2021; it relies on sales tax.
  • Texas: its constitution bans a personal income tax; it relies on sales tax and property tax.
  • Washington: it taxes some large capital gains, but not wages, and takes two small insurance premiums from pay.
  • Wyoming: it relies on taxes on minerals, and on sales and property taxes.

Every other state taxes wages, some with one flat rate and some with brackets. The US paycheck calculator shows them side by side.

Is my paycheck tax-free in a state with no income tax?

No. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of every paycheck in every state. On $60,000 a year, a single filer pays $5,020.00 of federal income tax and $4,590.00 of Social Security and Medicare, and takes home $50,390.00, which is $1,938.08 every two weeks. Only the state income tax line is missing.

A few small deductions can remain. Washington takes premiums for long-term care and for paid family and medical leave ($832.30 a year on $60,000), and Alaska takes a small unemployment insurance contribution ($271.00). They are not income tax, and the calculator includes them.

How much more do I take home without a state income tax?

Exactly the state tax you would otherwise pay. For a single filer with nothing taken before tax, here is what each state with an income tax on this site takes:

State tax and payroll contributions a year on $60,000 and $100,000, 2026
On $60,000On $100,000
California $2,353 $6,211
Georgia $2,246 $4,242
Illinois $2,825 $4,805
Michigan $2,299 $3,999
New Jersey $2,210 $4,790
New York $2,933 $5,303
North Carolina $1,885 $3,481
Ohio $1,207 $2,313
Pennsylvania $1,884 $3,140
Virginia $2,636 $4,936

On $60,000, the gap runs from $1,207 a year against Ohio to $2,933 against New York. The figures include what each state takes from pay besides income tax, such as California SDI, and New York’s is outside New York City. Local income taxes, such as those in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan towns, would add more.

Is it cheaper to live in a state with no income tax?

Not always. These states still need money, so most lean on sales tax, property tax or both, and housing costs vary a lot between them. Whether you come out ahead depends on what you earn, what you spend, and whether you own a home. The higher your pay, the more a missing income tax is worth.

What if I live in one state and work in another?

The state where you do the work can usually tax the wages you earn there. If you live in New Hampshire and work in Massachusetts, for example, Massachusetts taxes that pay. If you live in a state with an income tax and work in one without, your home state taxes all your pay. Working from home usually counts as working where your home is, though a few states have their own rules. This calculator works out one state at a time.

Do I file a state tax return in these states?

For wages, no: there is no state income tax return to file. You still file a federal return each year, the same as everywhere else. If you move during the year from a state with an income tax, you may need to file a part-year return there for the months you lived in it.

What does this mean on a real salary?
