About the tools
Are these tools free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and everything is worked out in your own browser: nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Where do the figures come from?
From GOV.UK and gov.scot. The income tax, National Insurance and student loan figures are the same checked figures as our salary calculator. Each tool page says which of its own figures are still being checked, and our sources page lists every one with its official link.
Do the tools work for Scotland?
Yes. Every tool that involves income tax has a choice for Scotland, which uses Scotland’s own bands and rates.
Do they include student loans?
Yes, every tool that deals with pay lets you tick your plans: Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5 and the Postgraduate Loan.
Is this financial or tax advice?
No. The tools give estimates for typical cases. For your own situation, check GOV.UK or ask HMRC or a qualified adviser.
