What is different about paychecks in Maine?

Maine’s first rate, 5.8%, covers only the first $27,400 of taxable income for a single filer, so many full-time workers pay 6.75% on part of their pay. On $60,000, a single filer has $39,000 of taxable income after the deduction and exemption.

Maine raised its 2026 standard deduction by a law passed during the year, to $15,700 single and $31,400 joint. Paychecks earlier in the year may have withheld a little too much; the difference comes back when you file.

Maine paid family and medical leave takes up to 0.5% of pay from your paycheck, on pay up to the Social Security wage limit of $184,500, so at most $922.50 a year. Benefits began in May 2026. Some employers pay part or all of the employee share; this estimate assumes the most.
