How is take-home pay worked out in Australia?
Income tax, the Medicare levy and any HECS-HELP repayment come off your salary; super is paid on top. $80,000 for a resident, by hand:
- Tax-free threshold. The first $18,200 is tax-free for residents.
- Income tax. 15% of the $26,800 up to $45,000 is $4,020.00, and 30% of the $35,000 above it is $10,500.00: $14,520.00. At this income there is no low income tax offset.
- Medicare levy. 2% of $80,000 = $1,600.00.
- Take-home pay. $80,000 − $14,520.00 − $1,600.00 = $63,880.00 a year: $5,323.33 a month, $2,456.92 a fortnight, $1,228.46 a week.

What changed for 2026–27?
The first resident tax rate fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026, on income from $18,201 to $45,000. Anyone earning over $45,000 keeps $268 more a year. The law cuts it again to 14% from 2027–28. Your own saving, band by band: the income tax calculator.
How does a HECS debt change my pay?
From $69,528 of repayment income you repay 15% of each dollar over it, so a small pay rise past the threshold costs only a little. Tick the box above to add it, or see the HECS repayment calculator for how long your debt will take.
What does this leave out?
- A full year of income at the same pay, from one job. Pay typed for a month, fortnight, week or hour is turned into a year (an hour uses your hours a week × 52).
- Taxable income is your salary: no deductions, no other income, no salary sacrifice, and no reportable super or fringe benefits in your HELP repayment income.
- A single person with no dependants, paying the Medicare levy at the singles thresholds, with private hospital cover or under the Medicare levy surcharge thresholds (no surcharge).
- The year’s tax as the ATO assesses it. Your employer withholds through the ATO’s tax tables, which can differ by a little; the difference comes back at tax time.
- The Medicare levy thresholds are those in the law in force from 1 July 2026. A later Budget may raise them for 2026–27.
What else can I work out?
- Income tax calculator Tax on any taxable income, band by band, and what the 2026–27 tax cut saves.
- HECS repayment calculator Your compulsory HELP repayment on any income, and how long the debt takes to clear.
- Super guarantee calculator Your employer’s 12% super, and a package split into salary and super.
Questions about take-home pay in Australia
How much tax do I pay on $80,000 in Australia?
In 2026–27, $14,520.00 income tax and $1,600.00 Medicare levy for a resident: $16,120.00 in all, leaving $63,880.00 ($2,456.92 a fortnight).
What is the take-home pay on $100,000?
$77,480.00 a year in 2026–27, or $2,980.00 a fortnight, after $20,520.00 income tax and $2,000.00 Medicare levy. Your employer adds $12,000.00 super on top.
Is super included in my salary?
Usually not: super is paid by your employer on top, at 12%. If your offer is a “package” that includes super, tick “includes super” and we split it: $89,600 including super is an $80,000 salary. See the super guarantee calculator.
How much does a HECS debt take from my pay?
On $80,000, $1,570.80 for the year ($60.42 a fortnight): 15% of your income over $69,528. See the HECS repayment calculator.
Why is my payslip a little different?
Your employer withholds tax with the ATO’s tax tables, which round and work pay period by pay period. This calculator works out the tax for the whole year, as the ATO assesses it at tax time, so a payslip can be a few dollars off; the difference comes back, or is owed, when you lodge your return.
What if I am a foreign resident or on a working holiday visa?
You have no tax-free threshold and pay no Medicare levy. A foreign resident on $80,000 pays $24,000.00 (30% from the first dollar). Working holiday makers pay 15% up to $45,000, then the same rates.
Is this official?
No. This is an independent site, not linked to the ATO. We read every rate in the law itself and list each one on our sources page. For your own tax, use the ATO’s tax withheld calculator or a registered tax agent.
