What is different about paychecks in New Mexico?
New Mexico uses the full federal standard deduction on the return, but its 2026 paycheck tables take off only half of it. So most workers have more taken from their paychecks than they owe, and get the difference back as a refund. This calculator shows the tax you owe for the year, not the withholding.
At lower incomes there is an extra exemption of up to $2,500 a person. It shrinks by 15 cents for each dollar of income over $20,000 for a single filer (10 cents over $30,000 on a joint return or for a head of household), and stops above $36,667 ($55,000).
The top rate, 5.9%, starts at $210,000 of taxable income for a single filer and $315,000 for a joint return. A single filer reaches 4.7% at $33,500 of taxable income ($50,000 joint).
New Mexico has no city or county wage taxes, and nothing else comes out of your paycheck for the state.
