What are Alabama’s income tax rates for 2026?
Alabama has three rates. For a single filer or a head of family: 2% on the first $500 of taxable income, 4% up to $3,000 and 5% on the rest. A joint return’s brackets are twice as wide ($1,000 and $6,000).
Before the rates, Alabama subtracts a standard deduction that shrinks as income rises, the federal income tax you pay, and a personal exemption: $1,500 single, $3,000 for a joint return or a head of family.
| Rate | Single | Married filing jointly | Head of household |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2% | from $0 | from $0 | from $0 |
| 4% | over $500 | over $1,000 | over $500 |
| 5% | over $3,000 | over $6,000 | over $3,000 |

What is different about paychecks in Alabama?
Alabama is one of the few states that lets you subtract the federal income tax you pay, and it takes off all of it. A single filer on $60,000 pays about $5,020 in federal income tax, which lowers their Alabama tax by about $251.
The standard deduction slides down as income rises: $3,000 for a single filer with income up to $25,999, then $25 less for each $500 more, down to $2,500 from $35,500. A joint return starts at $8,500 and ends at $5,000; a head of family starts at $5,200.
Because the top rate of 5% starts at just $3,000 of taxable income ($6,000 joint), Alabama’s tax works out close to a flat 5% on most pay. The rates are fixed in Alabama law and do not change with inflation.
