What is different about paychecks in West Virginia?

West Virginia lowered every rate for 2026, under a law signed in March 2026 that reaches back to January 1. The top rate is now 4.58%, on taxable income over $60,000.

At low pay the Family Tax Credit takes off the whole tax: up to $15,650 of income for one person and $21,150 for a married couple. Above that it shrinks by 10% of the tax for every $300 more, and it is gone above $18,350 ($23,850 for a couple). It is never paid back as cash.

A married couple can file separate West Virginia returns, but that does not lower the tax on wages: the brackets for separate returns are exactly half as wide, so the couple pays at least as much as on a joint return.

West Virginia cities and counties do not tax income. Some cities charge a flat city service fee to people who work there; it is not income tax and is not in this estimate.
