A worked example, by hand
- Minutes to a decimal: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
- Add the hours: 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours.
- Pay: 7.75 × $20 = $155.00.
- The common mistake: writing 7:45 as 7.45 pays $149.00, $6.00 too little.
- Back again: 8.6 hours is 8 hours and 0.6 × 60 = 36 minutes, so 8:36.
Why do time clocks use 6 and 15 minutes?
A tenth of an hour is 6 minutes (0.1 hours) and a quarter hour is 15 minutes (0.25 hours), so times rounded to them turn into short, clean decimals. Federal rules allow rounding clock times to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour or quarter hour, as long as it evens out over time (29 CFR 785.48(b)). The time card calculator shows a week both rounded and exact.

How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?

Why does payroll use decimal hours?
Because you can multiply a decimal by the hourly rate: 7.75 hours × $20 = $155.00. Multiplying 7:45 by a rate does not work until it is a decimal.

Two places are enough for pay (0.33 for 20 minutes). Rounding to two places can be off by a few cents over a week; payroll that rounds clock times uses the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes instead.
What is 0.1 hours in minutes?
6 minutes. A tenth of an hour is 6 minutes, which is why some time clocks round to the nearest 6 minutes.
