How do I convert to military time? A worked example
- PM, from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM: add 12 to the hour. 2:30 PM: 2 + 12 = 14, so 1430.
- The hour after midnight: 12:00 AM to 12:59 AM starts at 00. 12:15 AM is 0015.
- AM, from 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM: keep the hour and add a leading zero. 9:05 AM is 0905.
- Noon hour: 12:00 PM to 12:59 PM keeps 12. Noon is 1200.
- Back again: from 1300 up, take 12 off the hour and add PM: 1745 is 17 − 12 = 5, so 5:45 PM.
- 2:30 PM is 1430
- 12:15 AM is 0015
- 9:05 AM is 0905
- 12:00 PM is 1200
- 11:59 PM is 2359
Midnight is 0000 at the start of a day and 2400 at its end, so a shift from 1600 to 2400 ends at midnight. NIST, the U.S. time standards agency, suggests the 24-hour clock or the words “noon” and “midnight” because 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. are easy to mix up (NIST, Times of Day FAQs).
How is military time used on a time card?
Many time clocks print 24-hour times because subtraction is simple: out at 1715, in at 0830, is 17:15 − 8:30 = 8:45 worked. Payroll then turns the minutes into decimal hours, dividing by 60:
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
For every minute from 1 to 60, see the decimal hours calculator. To total a week of punches, with overtime and pay, use the time card calculator: it reads 5:15 PM or 1715 alike.
