Military pay calculator 2026

An E-5 with over 4 years of service, stationed in San Antonio with dependents, gets $6,292.75 a month in basic pay, BAH and BAS, and takes home about $5,864.47 a month (married, a Texas resident). BAH and BAS are not taxed: tax comes off basic pay only.

Pick your rank and years of service, add your duty station’s ZIP code and your home state, and see your monthly and yearly pay and take-home pay. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

For BAH. The calculator loads a small list for the first two digits; your ZIP code never leaves your browser.

Dependents

  • BAH for ZIP 78234: San Antonio, TX (housing area TX285).
  • BAH and BAS are not taxed. Federal income tax (married filing jointly), Social Security and Medicare are worked out on basic pay only.
  • Texas has no income tax on wages, so basic pay is not taxed by the state.

How is military take-home pay worked out?

  1. Basic pay from the DFAS table for your grade and years of service. It rose 3.8% on January 1, 2026.
  2. BAH for your duty station’s ZIP code, your grade and whether you have dependents, from DTMO’s 2026 rates.
  3. BAS: $476.95 a month for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers and warrant officers.
  4. Federal tax on basic pay only: income tax for your filing status with the 2026 standard deduction, plus Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%). BAH and BAS are not taxable income.
  5. State tax by your state of legal residence, under its own rule for military pay (the table below), for every state and DC.

The same example as above, step by step: $3,946.80 basic pay, $1,869.00 BAH and $476.95 BAS make $6,292.75 a month; $126.35 federal income tax and $301.93 Social Security and Medicare come off, leaving $5,864.47.

Example: an O-3 with over 4 years, stationed in Norfolk with dependents, married and a Virginia resident: Virginia taxes $88,592 of the $88,592 basic pay ($310.28 a month), and take-home is about $9,007.53 a month. For any other state, the calculator shows pay before state tax and says so.

What are BAH and BAS?

BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) pays toward housing where you are stationed: it depends on the ZIP code, your grade and whether you have dependents. Look up any ZIP in the BAH calculator or browse BAH rates by location.

BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) pays toward food: $476.95 a month for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers in 2026. Neither allowance is taxed, which is why military take-home pay is higher than a civilian’s on the same total.

Will military pay go up in 2027?

Proposed, not final. As of October 7, 2026:

  • The President’s plan (House Document 119-189): “set the 2027 monthly basic pay increase for members of the Armed Forces at 7.0 percent for grades E1 to E5, 6.0 percent for grades E6 to O3, and 5.0 percent for grades O4 and above”.
  • The Senate committee’s bill (S. 4784, sec. 602): “Effective on January 1, 2027, the rates of monthly basic pay for members of the uniformed services are increased by 3.6 percent.”
  • The House bill (H.R. 8800) has no pay raise section, which leaves the President’s plan in place.

The final figure comes when Congress finishes the defense bill (usually in December); DFAS then posts the 2027 tables in late December or early January. This calculator uses the 2026 rates until then.

What does this leave out?

  • Special and incentive pays (such as flight, sea, jump or hazardous duty pay), bonuses and the clothing allowance.
  • The Overseas Housing Allowance and cost-of-living allowances outside the 50 states, partial BAH, BAH-Differential and BAS II.
  • Deductions such as the Thrift Savings Plan, life insurance (SGLI) and allotments.
  • The combat zone exclusion: pay earned in a combat zone is not taxed (for commissioned officers, only up to a monthly limit).
  • Local taxes, and the finer points of state rules (such as the New York and New Jersey tests for members who keep no home in the state, or a state’s own limits for Guard and Reserve pay).
  • Changes during the year: the result is a full year at this month’s rates, with no raise, promotion or move.

What else can I work out?

Questions about military pay

Is BAH taxable income?

No. BAH and BAS are not taxable income: IRS Publication 3 lists them among the allowances that “aren’t includible in your gross income”. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare are worked out on basic pay only, and so is state tax.

How much does an E-1 take home a month?

An E-1 with 2 years or less gets $2,407.20 a month in basic pay and $476.95 in BAS. At Fort Bragg/Pope, NC without dependents, BAH adds $1,341.00, and a single North Carolina resident takes home about $3,880.15 a month after federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and $53.65 of North Carolina tax.

Which state taxes my military pay?

Your state of legal residence, not the state where you are stationed: under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (50 U.S.C. 4001), military pay is not income from the duty station’s state. Each state then has its own rule. Of the 50 states and DC in 2026: 9 have no income tax on wages, 14 exempt active-duty pay, 10 exempt it while you are stationed outside the state (Louisiana up to $50,000), Virginia subtracts up to $15,000, and 17 tax it in full. The table below lists every state.

How much is BAS in 2026?

$476.95 a month for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers and warrant officers, from January 1, 2026 (DFAS). BAS II, for enlisted members when authorized, is $953.90. BAS is not taxed.

Will military pay go up in 2027?

Not decided yet. The President’s plan (House Document 119-189) proposes 7% for E-1 to E-5, 6% for E-6 to O-3 and 5% for O-4 and above; the Senate committee’s bill (S. 4784) proposes 3.6% for all grades. Proposed, not final: The final figure comes when Congress finishes the defense bill (usually in December); DFAS then posts the 2027 tables in late December or early January.

What is the most basic pay anyone gets in 2026?

Basic pay for O-7 to O-10 is capped at $18,999.90 a month (level II of the Executive Schedule), and for O-6 and below at $15,408.30 (level V). A senior enlisted advisor (E-9) gets $11,166.90 a month.
