BAH calculator 2026

BAH for 2026 depends on your duty station’s ZIP code, your pay grade and whether you have dependents. An E-5 with dependents gets $3,963 a month at Camp Pendleton, CA, $1,869 in San Antonio, TX and $3,132 in the Washington, DC Metro Area. BAH is not taxed.

Type a ZIP code to see your BAH. The calculator covers all 40,959 ZIP codes in DTMO’s 2026 list, and loads only the small part it needs.

The calculator loads a small list for the first two digits; your ZIP code never leaves your browser.

How does the BAH calculator work?

It looks up your ZIP code in DTMO’s 2026 list, which places it in one of 338 Military Housing Areas, then reads the rate for your grade and dependency status from DTMO’s 2026 table. O-8 to O-10 use the O-7 rate. A ZIP that is not in the list, or one outside the 50 states, gets no BAH, and the result says why.

Abilene/Dyess AFB (housing area TX270) is the one area with two sets of 2026 rates: DTMO raised them for May 16 to December 31, 2026. The calculator shows the new rate and the old one with their dates.

Where is BAH highest and lowest in 2026?

For an E-5 with dependents, a month. The middle of all 338 housing areas is $2,061.

214 ZIP codes in DTMO’s list have no BAH rate: Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (006 to 009), Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands (969), and American Samoa (96799). Members stationed outside the 50 states get OHA, not BAH.

What does this leave out?

  • BAH II, partial BAH, BAH-Differential and rate protection (keeping a higher rate from an earlier year while stationed in the same place).
  • The Overseas Housing Allowance, for members stationed outside the 50 states.
  • Basic pay, BAS and take-home pay: the military pay calculator adds them.

Questions about BAH

How is BAH calculated?

BAH depends on three things: the ZIP code of your duty station (which places you in one of 338 housing areas), your pay grade and whether you have dependents. DTMO’s table has no separate rates by service. Look up your ZIP above, or browse BAH rates by location.

Is BAH taxable?

No. BAH and BAS are not taxable income (IRS Publication 3), so no federal or state income tax, Social Security or Medicare is taken from them. Only basic pay is taxed.

What is the highest BAH in 2026?

For an E-5 with dependents, the highest is San Francisco, CA at $5,127 a month and the lowest Anniston/Fort McClellan, AL at $1,185. The middle of all 338 areas is $2,061.

Do O-8, O-9 and O-10 get more BAH than an O-7?

No. DTMO publishes one rate for O-7 and above, so O-8 to O-10 are paid the O-7 rate. This calculator does the same.

Is there BAH in Puerto Rico or Guam?

No. In DTMO’s 2026 list, 214 ZIP codes in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa have no BAH rate. Members stationed outside the 50 states get the Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) instead.

When do the 2027 BAH rates come out?

The Defense Department normally announces them in mid-December, and they start on January 1, 2027. Until then, the 2026 rates here apply.
