VA math does not add ratings: 50% and 30% combine to 65, which rounds to 70%. At 70%, a veteran with no dependents gets $1,808.45 a month from the December 1, 2025 rates, and it is not taxed.

Ratings: 50%, 30%
70% combined rating
$1,808.45 a month · $21,701.40 a year, not taxed
- 50 and 30%: 50 + 30 × (100 − 50) ÷ 100 = 65
The exact combined value is 65, which rounds to 70% (to the nearest 10, a 5 rounding up).
| 70% rate, veteran alone | $1,808.45 |
|---|---|
| A month | $1,808.45 |
| A year | $21,701.40 |
- VA disability compensation is not taxed.
- 2027 cost-of-living adjustment: not announced yet. The figures above are the rates from December 1, 2025.
- The bilateral factor is not included (see below).
How does the calculator combine ratings?
Exactly as the combined ratings table in 38 CFR 4.25 sets out:
- Sort ratings from highest to lowest.
- Combine the first two with the table (or formula) and keep the exact whole-number result.
- Combine that result with the next rating, and so on.
- Only at the very end, round to the nearest 10 (a final 5 rounds up). That is the combined rating that sets the pay rate.
Each step is the table’s rule: the next rating takes its share of what is left, a + b × (100 − a) ÷ 100, rounded to a whole number. We checked this rule against all 684 cells of the regulation’s Table I. The regulation’s own examples:
- 50% and 30% → 65 → 70%: this calculator gives 65 → 70%.
- 40% and 20% → 52 → 50%: this calculator gives 52 → 50%.
- 60%, 40%, 20% → 76 then 81 → 80%: this calculator gives 81 → 80%.
What are the VA disability rates?
Monthly compensation from December 1, 2025, as VA publishes it. Each extra child under 18 adds the amount in the last column.
| Rating | Veteran alone | With a spouse | Spouse and one child | Each extra child |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | $180.42 | $180.42 | $180.42 | – |
| 20% | $356.66 | $356.66 | $356.66 | – |
| 30% | $552.47 | $617.47 | $666.47 | $32.00 |
| 40% | $795.84 | $882.84 | $947.84 | $43.00 |
| 50% | $1,132.90 | $1,241.90 | $1,322.90 | $54.00 |
| 60% | $1,435.02 | $1,566.02 | $1,663.02 | $65.00 |
| 70% | $1,808.45 | $1,961.45 | $2,074.45 | $76.00 |
| 80% | $2,102.15 | $2,277.15 | $2,406.15 | $87.00 |
| 90% | $2,362.30 | $2,559.30 | $2,704.30 | $98.00 |
| 100% | $3,938.58 | $4,158.17 | $4,318.99 | $109.11 |
VA’s own example: at 70% with a spouse, three children under 18 and a spouse receiving Aid and Attendance, the payment is $2,074.45 plus $152.00 plus $141.00, which is $2,367.45 a month. The calculator gives the same.
When do VA disability rates go up?
2027 cost-of-living adjustment: not announced yet. The Social Security Administration normally announces it on the day the September price figures come out, October 14, 2026. VA matches the same percentage from December 1, 2026, once Congress passes the yearly adjustment act.
The rates above have applied since December 1, 2025, after a 2.8% adjustment. VA is required by law to match Social Security’s adjustment.
What does this leave out?
- The bilateral factor (38 CFR 4.26), an extra step VA takes for some disabilities on both sides of the body: if it applies to you, your combined rating can be higher than shown.
- Special monthly compensation, individual unemployability and other benefits paid on top of or instead of these rates.
- Changes to the payment, such as the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (not announced yet) or offsets against military retired pay.
- Any decision on a claim: only VA rates a disability.

Questions about VA disability pay
How does VA math work?
VA does not add ratings. It takes the highest rating first, then applies each next rating only to the part of you still “able”: 50% and 30% is 50 + 30% of the other 50, which is 65. Only the final value is rounded to the nearest 10, a 5 rounding up, so 65 becomes 70%.
What is 50% and 30% in VA math?
65, which rounds to 70%. At 70% a veteran with no dependents gets $1,808.45 a month from the December 1, 2025 rates.
How much is 100% VA disability a month?
$3,938.58 a month for a veteran alone, and $4,158.17 with a spouse, from December 1, 2025 ($47,262.96 and $49,898.04 a year).
Is VA disability compensation taxed?
No. VA disability compensation is not taxed, so the monthly figure is what you receive.
When will the 2027 VA COLA be announced?
Not yet. The Social Security Administration normally announces the cost-of-living adjustment the day the September price figures come out (October 14, 2026); VA matches it from December 1, 2026. The last one was 2.8%.
Do dependents raise VA pay at 10% or 20%?
No. At 10% ($180.42) and 20% ($356.66) everyone gets the same amount; a spouse, children and parents add to the payment from 30%.
